Built in 1971, the Liddell Power Plant provides approximately 10% of the electricity consumed in New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state. While coal provided the bulk of Australia’s electricity for decades, these plants quickly became unreliable “wreckage,” Mark Diessendorf, a renewable energy expert at the University of New South Wales, tells TODAY.

In addition to being inefficient, highly polluting and expensive to repair, coal-fired power plants will make Australia’s climate targets nearly impossible if they continue to be used. A centre-left government elected in 2022 on a pledge of climate action has pledged that 82% of the country’s electricity will come from renewable sources by 2030, up from just 30% currently. Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant, Eraring in New South Wales, is scheduled to close in 2025, with a few more to follow over the next decade.
